How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Find out how laser hair removal works and if it’s right for you.

You are dealing with unwanted hair, and you’re sick and tired of having to shave or wax regularly. We understand. Fortunately, there are other hair removal options out there that provide more effective and long-lasting results. Of course, before turning to our Issaquah, WA, dermatologist Dr. Suseela Narra for laser hair removal, you may wonder, “Is it actually permanent?”

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser technology uses a high-heat laser to heat up and damage the hair follicles to prevent the hair from regrowing. When you wax or shave, you are only removing the hair above the skin's surface, but with laser hair removal, we can target the hair to its follicles, which lie under the skin.

Of course, hair grows in cycles, so you’ll need to come in every few weeks so that we can ensure that we are targeting as much unwanted hair as possible. Laser hair removal works best on dark hair and light skin tones; however, many lasers on the market today can even target lighter hair and are safe to use on darker skin tones.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Much will depend on which area of the body our Issaquah, WA, dermatologist is treating with laser hair removal. Smaller regions like the upper lip, chin or underarms will only take a few minutes, while treating larger areas like the back can take up to an hour. We can also treat multiple areas at once. A laser hair removal session is performed every six weeks; most people undergo anywhere from four to eight sessions.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

It’s important to know that laser hair removal is not permanent. While it does heat up and damage the hair follicles, the follicles will eventually heal, and the hair will grow back. Yes, it’s true that laser hair removal will undoubtedly prevent hair regrowth for a lot longer than waxing or shaving, and when the hair grows back, it will be much lighter and finer. Laser hair removal will also reduce the amount of unwanted hair you have.
