April is Rosacea Awareness Month

Get the facts about this common facial disorder.

Did you know that April is Rosacea Awareness Month? This makes it the perfect time to talk about this chronic skin problem that impacts more than 14 million Americans (often between 30 to 50 years old). Whether you suspect that you might have rosacea or know someone who does, our Issaquah, WA, dermatologist Dr. Suseela Narra is here to provide you with everything you need to manage your rosacea.

What is rosacea?

You might think someone is just blushing, but it’s possible that they could have this common skin condition. Rosacea is characterized as a very intense red flush of the face. People with rosacea may feel as if they’ve been slapped or sunburned, as the flushed skin may burn or sting. Blood vessels may even be visible. Other signs of rosacea include,

  • Skin thickening
  • Pus-filled bumps that look like pimples
  • Eye redness and irritation
  • Swelling of the face
  • Scaly, dry patches

What can trigger rosacea?

Many things can trigger a rosacea flare-up, which will vary from person to person. Common triggers include,

  • Alcohol
  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Hot or cold weather
  • Spicy foods
  • Hot showers, baths
  • Certain skincare products

It’s essential to recognize your triggers to avoid them as best you can to manage flare-ups. If you’re unsure how to do this, our Board-certified dermatologists are the experts in treating rosacea.

How is it treated?

There is no cure for rosacea; however, Dr. Narra and her team can work with you to find the right lifestyle changes and medications to manage your symptoms. Early intervention can prevent the skin thickening and other more severe symptoms associated with rosacea (so it’s important not to leave rosacea untreated). Treatment includes medications, lasers, and peels.
